Always Say Yes to the Present Moment

Surrender to what is. Say ‘yes’ to life – and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.

As one who has long worked on the present-moment focus, I have seen how this discipline has brought me to a place of saying yes to life each day. I have also noticed how my life has progressively changed, and so much more appears to work for me instead of against me.

Another discovery I have made is that resistance to events and situations taking place in my life is a huge energy consumer. We all know energy is precious, and I feel that I and others around me are beginning to appreciate this fact. With particular regard to human energy, I have discovered mine is slow in replenishing, particularly as I face body and mind aging and growing older. In addition, I find my energy sapped by resisting what must take place naturally and spiritually in my life.

In the past, if events entering and circumstances arising in my life were uncomfortable, my first reaction was to resist. When this happens, I remind myself  to check my resistance to these events/circumstances I am facing now. Then I ask myself, Can I do anything about the event? If the answer is no, I do not resist the event; I say ‘yes.’ To my surprise (and delight), I come through the circumstance/event better than before.

If I can do something about the circumstance or event, then well and good, I do it; if not, I surrender to it. As this discipline becomes a habit, I find myself less stressed and stronger in energy.

It’s important to mention that training myself to address every event in my life with a ‘yes’ has not been easy, and it’s taken me a long time to form a habit of doing this. Much like Eckhart Tolle’s philosophy of always living now, not yesterday or tomorrow, focusing on what I am doing now has become a commitment and a discipline.

One of my ‘jobs’ in our home is washing the dishes. Before adopting ET’s philosophy into my life, I would have washed dishes as I gazed out the kitchen window at the beautiful green hills, hedgerows, sheep, and formation of the clouds, blissfully at work without even being conscious of what my hands were doing. Not so today, now I focus on the many beauties of dishwashing. The feel of warm, soapy water on a winter’s morn, inspecting each item for a thorough cleaning, packing away neatly into the kitchen cupboards, cleaning surfaces, sweeping the floor – trust me, it’s a new experience.
