An exercise in freewriting.
As athletes and sports people will go to a gym and train to build their strength and fitness, we writers should exercise our writing skills as often as possible. Well-known authors say, ‘Write, write, and then write some more.’
For me, freewriting in the early morning (I work best in the stillness of the early morning), where I put pen to paper for a strict 15 minutes, works wonders for me. I don’t use my laptop because I think the effect of pen and brain coordination is therapeutic and creatively stimulating.
Occasionally, I will use prompts, but that’s rare. I prefer to write and see how it turns out.
I find that this exercise pulls my creativity out of hiding, and after I have read my result, endorphins are buzzing inside me. I love this exercise, and my life loves it too.
Lastly, when I look at my notebook, I realize that I have a sizable collection of story snippets to use in the future.
I have posted a typical example below so you can see the result of fifteen minutes with no plot or planning. Go on – give freewriting a try – I dare you!
A Doggie’s Questions
The little ball of fluff, tucked up against his mother, was fast asleep. So far, life had been a series of sleep and feed for him. Things were changing, though; He was growing up and growing fast.
“Little puppy,” his mother said. “Soon, you will leave home to enter the wide world.”
“I like it here, mummy. It’s so cozy being close to you. And I’m scared to leave you.”
“It will be scary at first, but someone has already seen you; they want to take you to your new home because you are a special breed. Many humans wish for your breed – you will have a beautiful home where your new owners will feed you healthy foods and spoil you, too. “
“What’s breed, Mummy?”
“Breed means that you came from the tummy of a special Mummy. And Daddy, who put you in my tummy, is also a special dog”.
“What’s spoil Mummy?”
“In your new home, your owners will not only feed you special food, but now and again, If you are obedient, they will treat you to a special tasty biscuit.”
“How did Daddy fit me into your mummy?”
“My You do ask a lot of questions, don’t you?”
“What’s questions, Mummy?”
“ Go to sleep, my darling. It’s late.”
“What’s late, Mummy?”
Why do we love our dog?
