Our Minds Are Goldmines
Today, weβll shift focus from love to life; next month, weβll explore purpose. Our minds are like goldmines; without them, we canβt truly understand life. The “gold” in our mindsβour thoughts and ideasβdetermines the quality of our lives.
The Mind
How do we create and keep this βgoldβ in our minds? Itβs a simple but time-consuming process that takes commitment. Iβve spent over a decade trying to manage my mind better, and Iβm still working on it daily. The encouragement is that I am improving. Managing our minds is a journey, not a destination.

I grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, known in Zulu as βEgoli,β or the βCity of Gold,β because of its gold mines. The city is surrounded by sand piles and waste from gold mining, which is ugly and toxic due to the chemicals used in refining gold.
Having lived around this, worn gold jewelry, and seen how much wealth gold generates, I understand its value. Through family in the mining industry, I also know the risks and challenges of extracting gold.
You might wonderβwhat does gold have to do with your life? Think of it this way: gold’s purity mirrors our minds’ state. The quality of our thoughts shapes how we live.
Life
Are you satisfied with your life? Are you worried about your future? Do you have clear goals, or do you feel like youβre just drifting? Are you more anxious or scared than you used to be? Do you struggle to keep up with how fast things are changing?
Many people feel the same way. Much of this stems from the overwhelming amount of misinformation we encounter today. Itβs easy to get distracted by endless videos, social media, and news instead of focusing on improving ourselves. If you see yourself in these struggles, you need a solution to your lifestyleβitβs simpler than you might think.
Let me share a story:
A journalist kept seeing a beggar sitting by a post box, always quietly thanking those who gave him coins. One day, he spotted the man again near a park bench. His curiosity improved, so he went over, introduced himself, and sat down for a chat.

βMind if I ask you a few questions?β the journalist asked.
βFire away,β the beggar replied.
βIβve seen you around, and honestly, youβve had a rough life.β
βItβs not the easiest, no.β
βSo, did life just deal you a bad hand, and thatβs how you ended up begging?β
βActually, no.β
βOhβ¦ Well, is it okay if I dig a little deeper?β
βSure, I donβt mind.β
βIf you didnβt hit rock bottom, why live this tough life when you donβt have to?β
βBecause itβs the life I chose.β
βWhy would you choose it?β
βWell, I was a successful businessman from a young age. I had a familyβa wonderful wife and two beautiful kids. Life seemed perfect, but I barely gave them any time. Work always came first. Then, one day, I got the call no one wanted to get: My wife and children had died in a car crash. At that moment, it hit me just how badly Iβd messed up. I had chosen work over them when I didnβt need to. My grief was unbearable. After two years, I sold everythingβmy business, my possessions. I invested the money and decided to live this life as a beggar.β
βBut you donβt need to beg, do you? You said you invested your money.β
βThatβs right.β
βSo, what do you get out of living like this?β
βPeace, time, and contentment.β
βThatβs pretty hard for me to wrap my head around.β
βWell, I understand it. And honestly, isnβt that what matters?β
Donβt get me wrongβIβm not telling you to sell everything and take up begging! But I am saying that if you feel trapped by all the noise from the media and your thoughts dragging you down, it might be time to reassess things. Take control of your mind so your thoughts build you up instead of breaking you down.
I shall continue with this theme β βLiving Life By Managing My Thoughts.β
