“It is essential to bring more consciousness into your life in ordinary situations when everything is going smoothly. In this way, you grow in present power.
Eckhart Tolle – The Power of Now Journal.
In the light of Eckhart Tolle’s quote I am reminded of other famous quotes and here are a few:
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
“Planning is bringing the future into the present.”
“Effective performance is preceded by painstaking preparation.”
In essence I understand from ET’s statement that as I create and exercise the habit of bringing more consciousness into my everyday life, particularly when all is running smoothly; I develop the power of living in the present naturally. In other words I live in a state of consciousness at all times, just like my breathing – which I do without any thought or effort.
On this footing I live in a constant state of consciousness without any effort or thought. Living in a state of consciousness gives me focus on what I am doing at all times; the power of focus produces an improved quality of life for me. A better standard of my work, an improved character in my person, and a more helpful person to my family and the community in which I live.
If I consider physical exercise; benefit from this activity only arises in my being conscious of each exercise, not allowing my mind to wander. The more focused I am in going about each exercise, the more significant is the result, both in my body and in my mind. Why would I exercise today? In order that tomorrow I will be healthier in body and mind. The more exercise becomes well established as a habit in my life the more it becomes a lifestyle – a healthy one at that.
So, then I work on establishing a strong habit of consciousness each and every moment of every day. This is no easy feat for me as I tend to forget to keep myself in a state of consciousness. The more I remember, the more I improve, and this gives me a rewarding lifestyle.
I love the way ET expresses consciousness:
“Whenever there is beauty, kindness, the recognition of the goodness of simple things in your life, look for the background to that experience within yourself. But don’t look for it as if you were looking for something. You cannot pin it down and say, “Now I have it,” or grasp it mentally and define it in some way. It is like the cloudless sky. It has no form. It is space; it is stillness, the sweetness of Being and infinitely more than these words, which are only pointers. When you are able to sense it directly within yourself, it deepens. So when you appreciate something simple — a sound, a sight, a touch — when you see beauty, when you feel loving kindness toward another, sense the inner spaciousness that is the source and background to that experience.”[1]
Like so many philosophic statements that I have read – mostly those of Eckhart Tolle, I have found that they only became reality when I apply them to my life. Applying these ideas to my life takes commitment and time.
Try working on consciousness today and every day the change in your life will surprise you.
